I recently saw Dr. Jane Goodall speak. I went with my mom, and didn’t realize that it would be the perfect mother-daughter bonding opportunity. The thing is, Dr. Goodall’s mother encouraged Jane at every step towards becoming the figure she is today.  Her message was clear : let children play in the dirt and teach them about how to take the future of the planet into their own hands because we’ve done a good job of making a mess of it. The interdependence between generations is a central part of Dr. Goodall’s legacy. Even in her acknowledgement of the depressing state of environmental affairs, Dr. Goodall’s discussion was joyful and hope-affirming. My favorite thing she said is, « It isn’t a good day unless something can be added to your store of memories. » I’ll take that advice.
